Worthington’s history began in 1803, designed by a group of families in western Connecticut and Massachusetts before they made the trek. They put the things they valued most- school, church, library- at the center of their dream town. The “public square” would “remain for a green or parade.” Now, two hundred years later, Old Worthington still has that classic design, thanks in large part to the Worthington historical society.

In 1804 they formed an Episcopal congregation and a Mesonic lodge. They acquired a post office in 1805, an academy in 1808 and plotted one-third of the population in the village and two-thirds in surrounding farms. In 1893, the electric street railway connected Columbus and Worthington. The village became a village suburb with cars running every half hour and making it possible to live in Worthington and work or shop in Columbus OH. The post war years were boom years for Worthington when the 1950 population soared from approximately 2,000 to approximately 15,000 by 1970.
